The Difference Between 1,2- Propylene Glycol And 1,3- Propanediol

Propylene glycol, divided into 1,2-propanediol and 1,3-propanediol, the market is generally said to be 1,2-propanediol, CAS recognition number 57-55-6, as a chemical reagent, mixed with water, ethanol and a variety of organic solvents, its chemical formula is C3H8O2. Under normal condition, it is colorless viscous liquid, almost tasteless, and smells sweet. Propylene glycol can be used as the raw material of unsaturated polyester resin. It can be used as a wetting agent in cosmetics, toothpaste and soap with glycerol or sorbitol. It is used in hair dyeing, conditioning, leveling, antifreeze, cellophane, plasticizer and pharmaceutical industry.


1,3- propylene glycol CAS recognition number 504-63-2, the molecular formula is C3H8O2. Oxidation and esterification can occur.


Generally used in veterinary medicine water needle, pharmaceutical intermediates, food additives and so on 1,2-propanediol, the brand to Dow, Lieder as the main representative, followed by South Korea SK, imported Shell and other brands, widely used in many industries are the propanediol.


However, 1,3-propanediol is seldom used in the production of some pharmaceutical intermediates and oxidative esterification.


Propylene glycol, if there is no special requirement, is 1,2-propanediol, as long as you say to the supplier is propanediol, it is recommended to take Dow or Lieder as the main, although the product quality of domestic propanediol is improved earlier or later, but compared with imported brand products, there are still some shortcomings in many aspects. Propylene glycol imported is more cost-effective for manufacturers that require high quality propylene glycol.
